Everything you ever wanted to know about configuring Trixbox for the UK but were afraid to ask!

Hi welcome to the site. If you've arrived here there's a very good chance you're interested in Trixboxฎ / Asterisk™ the open source PBX software.

Trixbox and Asterisk -

If you're a bit vague on what they do or you have  never heard of either of these very clever bits of software then here's a brief recap:
  • Asterisk is a open source / free software implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX) originally created by Mark Spencer of Digium. The software started life back in 1999 and has gone through many changes since then.

Like any PBX, it allows a number of attached telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Asterisk was designed originally for the Linux operating system. Due to the open source nature of the software hundreds of other programmers have contributed features and functionality over the years.

The basic Asterisk software includes many features previously only available in expensive proprietary PBX systems. These include voice mail, conference calling, interactive voice response (phone menus), and automatic call distribution.

  • Trixbox is a Linux based telephony application based on Asterisk. The software includes a number of applications (including asterisk itself) that make it really easy to install, maintain and make use of a multi featured PBX system like Asterisk. Trixbox brings the functionality of a big business PBX to small and medium sized businesses.

The UK Configuration Problem!

Is Trixbox difficult to install? Not really. For someone basically competent around computers its fairly simple. You pop the Trixbox ISO CD into a PC and off it goes, 15 to 20 minutes later and you have a PBX. Fairly amazing stuff we agree....but actually not that useful until you connect it to the outside world....which is where the problems begin....

The tricky bit is getting the configuration right for your own particular hardware, handsets and telephone / VoIP providers. As with many open source projects there is a US bias in regards to configuration information. That's not a criticism of Trixbox or Asterisk, its just the way things are. The fact is there are far more developers and users of the software in the US than anywhere else. It terms of our own, UK based experience  it makes things just a little bit harder to get a working setup that's right for a British business.

To take just a couple of examples;

* Nice though the American lady on the voicemail prompts sounds, wouldn't you rather have British voice prompts? How's it done?

* And how about Dial plans, a nightmare at the best of times, but the examples you see rarely reflect the way UK dialling codes are structured.....

* Want to connect to UK based analogue or ISDN phone lines or handle UK Caller ID's properly? Of course you do, so what are the best cards and setup?

* And lots and lots of other issues.....

Again all fairly tricky, but essential if you want things to work right. Basically you need the right hardware and software settings to get a PBX that you can completely trust.

Can you find out all this stuff on line? Absolutely... that's if you have a couple of months to research, build, install and test your own system......but maybe you've got better stuff to spend your time on?

And The Solution..........

Trust us, we've been through all the configuration nightmares with Trixbox / Asterisk! It was a complete pain, but eventually we worked out a combination of hardware / software settings which basically just works! After we had built a few systems for our own customers, other resellers and companies started to ask us what hardware and software configuration we were using. It became apparent we had tapped into a bigger market....

Let us introduce you to the BritTrix range......an inexpensive cube or rack mounted PC based system pre-installed with Trixbox and configured to work in the UK straight out of the box. Why suffer the pain of trying to figure out working combinations of hardware / software yourself when we have already done the hard part for you?

We currently have some great bundled deals on offer. Catch them while you can....
